I just finished the latest Michael Crichton book called Next. Its about the current and future issues surrounding genetic research and manipulation. This book deals with the politics, science and morality and responsibility of technology and its effects on the population at large.
Its one of those books that is scary not because of a boogie man under the bed, but because this stuff really could happen and the boogie man has a petri dish and neon rabbits to prove it. There were so many plots and story lines I don’t know how he kept up with all of them, but he did and the resolution could not have been any better if he had put it in a box and tied it with a bow. Too bad that’s not true for real life.
The book is interspersed through with “headlines” some true and some not, at times it can be hard to tell. I mean really clones as art, making soap out of a politicians fat, being denied insurance based off of a genetic predisposition and those are the true headlines. I love the way Crichton takes current events and uses fiction to extrapolate on them. Makes you pause for thought. He is also really good at telling you where he got his info from so you can go check it out for yourself.
With the recent FDA approval of cloned meat ( like we havent already been eating it) people really need to wake up listen, and pay attention to what is going on around them because more and more theses days it effects what is going on within you too.

You are so right that the plot lines in science fiction and techno thrillers is becoming increasingly plausible that it’s scary. And Crichton is one of, if not the best in this genre.
If you’re looking for similar authors, you might like Dan Ronco as well. His latest, Unholy Domain looks at what happens when religious fundamentalism clashes with scientific progress … another all to possible scenario given the current state of the world.
